Speak Out to End Domestic Violence October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Wednesday October 4th, Refuge House will be holding its annual survivor speak-out and candlelight vigil at Lake Ella from 6:00PM – 8:00PM. We encourage the entire community to join us to honor and support survivors of domestic violence. Our featured speaker will be Ms. Cassie Hammock, executive director of Frenchtown Outreach, followed by community performances, and a speak-out by survivors. Children’s activities will be part of the evening, and art work from survivors of domestic violence and their children. Free refreshments! Admission is free and everyone is welcome. Refuge House is a domestic violence center and a rape crisis center that serves Leon County and the 7 surrounding counties. We have two emergency shelters and outreach offices in each county we serve. Last year Refuge House offered safe shelter to 557 women and children, answered 3.040 hotline calls for help, assisted 1,029 victims in our Courthouse program, and provided 2,280 domestic violence and 291 rape victims with individual and group counseling. A tradition for more than a decade, National Violence Awareness Month is observed for the purpose of celebrating survivors of domestic violence, honoring the victims who lost their lives to domestic violence, raising awareness in our community about violence in the home and providing strength, in numbers, to eliminate domestic violence. The United States Congress first passed Domestic Violence Awareness Month legislation in 1989 and has continued to draw attention to efforts to end violence in our homes ever since.
